Warwick Low crept into the narrow shade of an overturned column jutting from the sands. Boundlessly, the Chess Desert stretched from his eyes, but only this piece had caught his attention for now. The Duel World was, in part, procedurally generated based on the amalgamation of card lore. It was in these stretches of the game, typically kept out of the forefront, that Warwick was primarily interested.
His research project meant using this game to investigate a link between Duel Monsters and the culture of civilizations long lost to the world. In some way, Warwick was interested in seeing what aspects of those civilizations had been reincarnated in this virtual world.
The underside of the stone that caught his eye was disappointing. Like many other structures in the Chess Desert, it was embellished by vague ancient scribbling. The ornamentation wasn’t deliberate, however, and wasn’t something that would have reasonably been like some time capsule in a video game. The glyphs and symbols on the tablet were akin to an alphabet soup, with no care for what they each meant.
Another dead end only aggrandized the feeling of the heat. For a virtual experience, the Kaiba Corporation were some sticklers for making sure Warwick felt persecuted by traveling under the sunlight with reckless abandon. As he rested for a moment, the heat began to magnify. What was the feeling of a Summer day was quickly becoming an encroaching campfire.
Warwick looked up from the shimmering sands to identify a second, smaller Sun that he was sure hadn’t been there just moments prior. The ball of flames hurtled towards the young man, and Warwick went from incredulous to alarmed in as much time as it took him to sprint off and away from the monster’s crash landing.
Wreathed in flames and frustrated it had lost its prey, a great, blazing mare shook off the desert sands, beating its large wings with anger.
“Easy now…” Warwick plead, hands outstretched and stepping away from the flaming crater. Shockingly, Warwick’s reasoning with the horse failed to produce any results but another aggressive charge towards his fleeing frame. “Help!!! I need a pause button!”
